A severe hailstorm injured at least seven people and 80 to 90 others at a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, on Wednesday night. The storm, which produced hailstones up to the size of golf balls, caused cuts and bruises to many concertgoers, and some were taken to the hospital.
The storm hit just as the concert by British singer-songwriter Louis Tomlinson was getting underway. Tomlinson was forced to cut the show short, and concertgoers were evacuated from the venue.
West Metro Fire Rescue said that seven people were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. A total of 80 to 90 people were treated on scene for lacerations and bruises.
"Red Rocks and other outdoor venues are subject to this kind of weather," said West Metro Fire Rescue spokesperson Greg Smith. "Fans are generally prepared for it. Last night was a hard one."
The hailstorm also caused damage to the venue, including broken windows and damaged roofs. Red Rocks officials said that they are working to assess the damage and make repairs.
The severe weather that hit Red Rocks on Wednesday night is a reminder of the dangers of severe thunderstorms. If you are planning to attend an outdoor event, it is important to be aware of the weather forecast and to take precautions.
