Zimbabwe defeated Netherlands by 48 runs in their fifth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe posted a challenging 254-5 in their 50 overs, thanks to half-centuries from Craig Ervine (72) and Wesley Madhevere (56). The Netherlands were then restricted to 206-9 in their reply, with Brandon Mavuta taking 3-35.
The win keeps Zimbabwe in contention for a place in the World Cup, as they now sit third in Group A, level on points with the Netherlands but with a better net run rate.
Zimbabwe made a solid start to their innings, with Ervine and Regis Chakabva putting on 55 for the first wicket. Ervine was the aggressor, hitting 10 fours in his 72-ball innings.
Madhevere joined Ervine in the middle and the pair put on a further 66 for the second wicket. Madhevere was more circumspect than Ervine, but he still managed to hit four fours in his 56-ball innings.
The Netherlands bowlers were unable to build any pressure on the Zimbabwe batsmen, and they were eventually restricted to 254-5.
In reply, the Netherlands got off to a good start, with Max O'Dowd and Vikramjit Singh putting on 50 for the first wicket. However, the wickets began to tumble after that, and the Netherlands were eventually bowled out for 206.
Mavuta was the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers, taking 3-35. Sikandar Raza and Donald Tiripano also took two wickets apiece.
The win was a much-needed one for Zimbabwe, who had lost their previous two matches. The win keeps them in contention for a place in the World Cup, and they will be hoping to build on this momentum in their next match against Ireland on Thursday.
